This is quite the exit interview - a social worker who left the Harris County DA’s Office says they were exploiting sex workers with their prostitution diversion program - which was actually using the women for intel-gathering instead of helping them.
"We felt the program shifted from a focus on harm reduction, to one that prioritized intelligence-gathering," she wrote, "even if it meant harming the people we were supposed to be protecting.”
“I believe these are the types of programs that our community is desperately and boldly demanding that we stop, programs that harm and exploit traditionally vulnerable people.”
The issue “came into sharp focus” when she raised concerns about being sent to scenes instead of the community agencies that would have confidentiality - but was allegedly told “these were prostitutes” so it didn’t matter.
That, she says, was unethical. When she told the bureau chief it was unethical for licensed social workers to do that, the chief allegedly suggested just hiring unlicensed people instead:
There’s a whole bunch of other problems she identifies:
And she offers a lot of possible solutions - it’s an incredibly thorough exit interview
Also there’s an interesting note about the incredibly high turnover among the social workers there - interesting in part given the long-standing problem with turnover among the attorneys. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/High-turnover-continues-at-Harris-County-DA-s-13779505.php
