I want to apologise to anyone in the @netscisociety (and others involved in organisation) who takes this as a personal attack. This is not my intention. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for all the hard work that goes into organising these events. Sorry.

My goal is to raise issues that I find concerning so that we may start a discussion to improve things.
No matter how hard we try or however good our intentions are, there will always be room for improvement. 2/n

In this specific case, my first impression was inaccurate (thanks @furkangursoy34 for clarifying things!).
And perhaps I am presenting my criticisms poorly. I can only endeavour to do better in future. 3/n

But I think there more are lessons to be learnt here:
1. There is a lack transparency/communication about things that are relevant to society members. 4/n

I stand by my original tweet that it is weird to receive an email that seems to boast about an abundance of funds, when many of us are paying what seems to be an expensive fee for an online event (I& #39;m not suggesting it should be free). 5/n
2. Disproportionate funding for one country over another IS a bias. *Especially* for an online event.
In an online event we remove the issue of unbalanced travel costs. So it seems a shame to introduce a different geo bias! 6/n

3. (or 2A.) And specifically the issue of favouring US- based participants: I have found myself on more than one occasion defending NSS to others who claim it is too US-focussed. 7/n
Finally: Again, I am sorry to have upset/offended/annoyed anyone about this. I will try better and welcome any suggestions for improvement. 8/n
(even if those suggestions are "shut the hell up") 9/9
