I'm keen to make sure "Building in Public" doesn't become "Celebrating in Public."

To that end, here's something I just fucked up.

A brief dissection of my mistake👇
1/ Context

After sending the newest edition of The Generalist, I got this email from a user.

I always encourage people to reach out — I'm very grateful this reader did. They could have just unsubscribed.
2/ Problem

They signed up for The S-1 Club, very reasonably expecting S-1 related content. Instead, they received two other emails from me...

- One about VC's war for talent
- One about a new product

Damn.
3/ What went wrong?

There's two possibilities I'm troubleshooting. Either way, the mistake is mine.

Possibility 1: The reader heard about The S-1 Club, but signed up via The Generalist. In that case, they'd get access to all emails.
4/ What went wrong?, cont

Possibility 2: The reader signed up via The S-1 Club, but accidentally got tagged incorrectly. That meant they got emails that weren't intended for them.
5/ What were my mistakes and the lessons learned?

First, I need to improve my onboarding communication to make sure I users understanding everything they are (or are not) signed up for.

Next, I need a better system for users to manage their preferences.
6/ What am I doing?

I immediately apologized to reader + am investigating the issues.

More broadly, I'm in the process of building a fuller website to communicate the relationship between properties. I/m also integrating with @tryPico so members can better manage preferences.
7/ Fin

Trying to build better infrastructure so readers have total transparency about what they're getting. They deserve to receive only what they want, nothing that they don't.

This was a bummer.
