An interesting thing about the "book vs. movie" debate is that it only happens in a very narrow set of cases that isn& #39;t illustrative of any larger point. E.g. nobody ever talks about if "Die Hard" is better than Roderick Thorp& #39;s novel "Nothing Lasts Forever." https://twitter.com/MommaUnfiltered/status/1300468848685187072">https://twitter.com/MommaUnfi...
"The Godfather," "Vertigo," "Gone with the Wind," "It& #39;s a Wonderful Life," "Casablanca," plenty of all-time-great movies based on possibly-not-all-time-great books. Never really included, possibly because they aren& #39;t considered famous enough as books?
And also nobody really talks about e.g. the 1990 movie version of "The Handmaid& #39;s Tale" vs. the book. As if these examples all just "don& #39;t count" in this narrow band of books/movies we& #39;re talking about for some unexplained reason.
We only ever compare certain acceptable examples, so the debate is about a very narrow band of merit. Which I find illustrative in any conversation about the relative merits of two already-almost-indistinguishable groups (like maybe in American politics?)
Also this isn& #39;t about this thread specifically! Just some stray thoughts about the way we debate things On Here / These Days / etc.
