We will never know how social media impacted 2016 US elections (or 2018 in
or 2019 in
or...). But thx to new initiative led by @TaliaStroud and @j_a_tucker working w/ @AnnieFranco and @chadkdj, we'll know much more about impact of FB+Insta in 2020 https://medium.com/@2020_election_research_project/a-proposal-for-understanding-social-medias-impact-on-elections-4ca5b7aae10 1/7

Always room for improvement, but, to use scientific language: this is a big 'effing deal. We are living through crisis of empirical social science where assymetry btw resources+data available for private and gov' and those of scientists grow by the day https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0038038507080443 2/7
I've never seen anything like this, and an amazing group of outstanding scientists involved in this who, with their various collaborators and students, will make massive contributions on this basis. These. Would. Not. Have. Been. Possible. Without. Really glad to see this. 3/7
Having said that, what's next on the X-mas wishlist? A lot. To name just a few things
1) It is not a criticism of scientists involved to say exclusive access to unique data to few people - at privileged US unis - is...not entirely in line with first of the "Mertonian norms"

2) Then, for FB. Glad to see Insta involved. What about WhatsApp? I know, encryption etc, but can something be done?
3) Beyond FB: as Twitter and Reddit have done, this sets standards Google ought to meet. Can something be developed esp for search+YouTube, both v/important? 5/7

4) Then the usual thing.

! Sure, I get it, very important. But hey, Bihar (population ~100m) have state elections in October in
. Can we get something international?
5) Now I'm greedy, but let's imagine - how about news media jumped on this idea? BBC? New York Times? 6/7

As a scientist, I'll never be happy w/data selectively released to select people at the discretion of powerful private companies (or gov' entities for that matter). Must be better models.
That said, this is important step and the scientists involved will do outstanding work. 7/7

Good thread from former FB (and top-notch scientist) @SolomonMg here on the initiative: https://twitter.com/SolomonMg/status/1300534618622394368
