Neon Genesis Evangelion & the Monogatari series: The usage of typography to build a visual universe and expand the narration

This is a thread to highlight a creative aspect of the direction I find unique and implemented brilliantly in both series.
Evangelion’s ambitious direction is pioneer when it comes to creating a strong visual identity, especially in a time where there’s only a few computer typefaces.
The opening alone, tells volumes about Anno’s creative bias.
Throughout the series, there’s a heavy presence of texts flashed into the viewer for a split second (in the style of subliminal messages) offering additional meanings and sometimes biblical references.
The title cards’s design is sober yet so clever, it feels iconic. It features a number of different fonts to exhibit the title of the episode, while Neon Genesis Evangelion stays the same. Episodes 26, 25’, 26’ are similar fonts.
A great attention is dedicated to building a coherent typographic universe: Nerv and SEELES’s logos, numerous user interfaces or title sequences are consistently depicted with the combination of Helvetica or Matisse almost as a representation of the franchise.
Following Eva’s legacy, Monogatari pushes the concept even farther with brio. The usage of typography builds a strong and abstract feel to the visual universe of the series, which is a perfect fit.
Many times, we can observe typography being used to signify events or accentuate emotions in a stunning way from a graphic design point of view. It also adds a lot of indications to the narrative.
On the other hand, I think it’s safe to say the typographic abundance is also used in a way to overwhelm the viewer. There’s a lot of informations displayed, repeated or less meaningful enhancing the conceptual energy to the series.
Both works stands out by their stunning direction and I think typography is more important than we think.
Thanks a lot for reading, sorry if this thread is a bit of a mess, I did my best to articulate my thoughts in a cohesive way and my english is not so good :)
