i can’t deal w/ this “save the children” stuff not b/c i’m some evil leftist who hates babies, but because i hate things that distract from the actual issue at hand. do too many children run away and suffer abuse? YES! absolutely! 1 is too many! but it is not happening at the 1/
hands of some highly organized ring of elites who are sweeping through neighborhoods + “trafficking” your kids in the night. it just ISN’T happening. the real issue is that kids suffer abuse in their homes, have nowhere to go, and have ZERO safety nets to turn to. 2/
what is there, the foster care system? we don’t even have to discuss this. we know it’s awful and that kids who are leaving abusive situations (that they prob ran away from once already) often face abuse *again* once they’re in the system. 3/
i love this example from the You’re Wrong About podcast. they give a scenario of a queer 16yrold boy who runs away from his abusive home, nowhere to go (b/c there are no options for homeless youth,) realizes the only way he can have a place to sleep is by having sex w/ some1 4/
now, in this example, who does it help when this is labeled “trafficking”? and how does this prevent the issue from happening again OR from happening in the first place? what if they were trans? the “save the children” hashtag and memes do v little other than cause moral panic 5/
over an issue than can have a real solution. the podcast episode gets into how the #s don’t make sense + how insane it is to think that as many people would have the tech + financial resources to match the narrative that is circulating rn. 6/
idk y’all... it’s a tough issue to discuss for obvious reasons. pls don’t come for me- it’s just that these meme-sharers are seeing this issue through some Epstein-like lens, and that is SO far from the norm. childhood abuse is far more layered than that. das all for now. 8/8
