What needs to change to make society a better place for people with mental illnesses as disabilities? /1
For one an acknowledgement that we exist would be nice!
We live in a society where acknowledgment of mental illnesses all too often extends to only short term conditions
For example it can be very difficult to access mental health services beyond primary care (something I found) I kept being met with doctors telling me funding cuts meant I’d be unlikely to receive additional care
The media needs to change, in the media mental illness is all to often seen as an event, something you have for a bit and then your life carries on without it. This isn’t the case. One show that overcome this way I May Destroy You (is an amazing watch!) ....
In it the main character navigates different stages of trauma throughout the series, it’s something that is there for the whole show
Some people that are on here are employers. Convention career paths may not be accessible to everyone, please be open minded and value whatever experience we have. I came out of uni with a heap of volunteering experience as opposed to the conventional STEM route of internships
And a pretty big one is don’t question us. If we say we have a disability, we have a disability. If you’re looking for proof I don’t have any but regardless I don’t have to prove my disability to anyone!
