i cannot believe the take ppl get from chinese being written at the protest is "carenotcops is sinophobic" and not "Lee has used her WoC identity and HK roots as a ruse for progressiveness so writing in chinese is a callout for being complicit in maintaining racial hierarchy"

yes ppl spray painted in chinese bc of her origins and that is not a bad thing. a lot of current uprising against police is learning and taking directly from HK protestors. That means ka yee lee is not ignorant to the dynamics of police and colonialism

so her continuing to claim HK while relishing in in the spoils of policing and colonialism in the U.S. is a slap in the fucking face, esp to the HK protestor who wrote it at her house.

bringing up someones origins in and of itself is not racist. thinking so is just a fancy version of the "i see no color" trope. see that ka yee lee is asian and from hk and see what it means for that identity to exist in a world where race and origin is political

you dont need to be east asian/chinese to get this. race and ethnicity is more than language and culture. its about power. its about politics. its about police, colonialism and violence. in a #BlackLivesMatter world, we are tasked to think of race in ways we may not have before

and the fact that ppl are exponentially more outraged at graffiti than KYL calling cops on poc protestors, being a landlord (fun fact!), and funding one of the largest police forces in the world reminds me why i couldnt wait to leave this godforsaken institution

im sorry but the outrage over this is truly blowing my mind. black ppl call out lightfoot all the time. latinx ppl call out other latinx ppl who work for ICE. i dont get how this registered as something different. intracommunity discourse plays out in public all the time
