I reckon that the truth about leftwing comedians, rightwing comedians etc is that it's actually all about class. As most things in this country are.
And that the middle class has hegemonised comedy in the same way that it's wholly taken over acting and sports like cricket.
If you're middle class and doing comedy it means you've actively turned down the idea of working in a bank or as an accountant. That means you are intrinsically much more likely to have a lefty kind of disposition.
The most popular working class comics are apolitical. I'm not sure Peter Kay has ever been at all interested in politics. Just like 95% of the country and 95% of his audience.
I'm not saying working class and lower middle class people are not interested in politics. But, sensibly, they're more interested in seeing a comedian who makes them laugh.
Unlike Stewart Lee fans, they don't read papers which go on about politics the whole time. It's not a constant cultural reference point. They don't define themselves by politics in a way that fans of Lee - the "edgy" comedian whose fans agree with every single thing he says - do.
Anyway. Everyone should go and see "Sullivan's Travels". It's funny and it's true.
