An @IATA briefing this morning, including an update on July traffic stats. #COVID19 #AvGeek #PaxEx
"The trend is still very weak. We're up from the April low, but not very much." - Brian Pearce Down 80% YoY

A little less than expected in the forecast.

Ouch
International struggled MUCH more than domestic. And even among the domestic markets recovery varies wildly.

"These differences are largely related to success in controlling virus spread." - Pearce #PaxEx #AvGeek
The only international market showing any growth really is intra-Europe.
IATA survey data shows business confidence much higher than consumer confidence.

Turns out the global travel demand is more tied to consumer sentiment this time around, not business demand.

Some relative increased demand on premium fares. Biz travel or on-board distancing?
Quarantines have a negative impact on travel bookings. LFs remain depressed.

No surprise, but IATA ignoring the need to also control the health impact isn't a good look IMO.

Demand remains a mess for the industry. Gap between capacity and demand is growing, not shrinking. This means increase cash burn per Pearce. Now is not a good time for that as gov't support draws back.
IATA DG/CEO Alexandre de Juniac is now speaking, talking about how flying is safe and how more coordination of border opening is needed. And lamenting the loss of jobs.
Now AdJ is proposing a 3-point plan for reopening borders for aviation, mostly tied to ICAO guidelines.

Finally mentions testing as a key component.
AdJ now calling for an "urgent waiver" of the 80/20 slot rules. Many countries (MX, AU, NZ, etc.) already there, but Europe straggling. IATA pushing for EC to act before mid-October.
AdJ says he's not seen people flying without masks so that must not really be happening.

Never mind all the photos and reports to the contrary. 🤷‍♂️
