With a few caveats, IME this pattern generally holds true.
At one extreme there are photographers who are entirely about gear, and at the other photographers who are all about the photograph - women seem to incline more towards that second half.

The caveat:
If you picture it like a bell curve - there are actually two bell curves, and I think the one for women photographers peaks slightly further away from the "gear fixated" end of the scale than the one for men.
There are definitely outliers in both bell curves.

FWIW I think I personally land somewhere in the middle, just slightly more towards the process/photo end but I'm a sucker for an interesting film camera.
