DEVAS, ASURAS

Asuras and Devas both have common Ancestor - Rishi Kashyapa.
Rishi Kashyapa had 2 wives, Diti and Aditi.
RK + Aditi Children = Devas
RK + Diti Children = Asuras.

Devas & Asuras were cousins.

ASURA AS PER RIGVEDA

In Original Vedas Gods are addressed as both “deva” and “asura”!!

DEVA - Illuminating, Generous
ASURA - Giver of Knowledge

“केतुः । केतः । चेतः। चित्तम् । क्रतुः । असुः। धीः। शची । माया । वयुनम् । अभिख्या इत्येकादश प्रज्ञानामानि”

Asu means Knowledge.

There are 2 kinds of Asuras - Good and Malevolent.

Good Asuras called Adityas, led by Varuna. They've Good intentions, Constructive inclination.

Bad Asuras called Danavas, led by Vritra. They've bad intentions, Destructive chaos causing inclination.

Example. Even though Hiranyakashipu was a bad Asura, his son Prahallada was a good Asura.

LATER VEDIC PHASE.

Only in later vedic period the definition of Asuras got depicted as A-Sura , one who are opposite of Devatas (deities).

Geneology Of Mahabali :

Rishi Kashyapa + Diti = Hiranyakashipu -> Prahallada -> Virochana -> Mahabali

He was a staunch Devotee of Sri Vishnu n had traits of Prahallada.

Mahabali was a generous king, but he was surrounded by wicked Asuras who killed Devatas n Humans.

In a war b/w Devatas n Asuras, Mahabali was killed, but brought back to life by AMRITA procured by Wicked Asuras. Hence he was immune from Death.

Mahabali had conquered Earth n was Preparing Yajna to conquer Heaven, take Indra's seat.

INDRA is NOT an individual, rather it's a Position, like President or Prime Minister (more about it later).

When Indra approached Vishnu to help, Vishnu didn't join the war against Mahabali. He instead took Avatar of Vamana to check his worthiness.

Mahabali was conducting Ashwamedha Yajna and giving gifts, Vaman as a dwarf asked for land of 3 steps. Bali agreed by pouring water.

Note, Mahabali is wearing Janeu & has Shikha, which indicates he was a Knowledgeable Person (dont get confused by British's Caste system).

To test, Vamana covered entire Swarga & Bhuloka with his 2 steps, there was no place left. King Mahabali humbly removed his Crown n requested Vamana to place 3red step on his head.
Sri Vishnu (Vamana) was impressed by his keeping his word & humility.

Sri Vishnu blessed Mahabali n gave him Sutala, constructed by Vishwakarma, which is bigger more beautiful, prosperous than Indraloka.
Bali was made richer than Indra & granted Immortality.
Sri Vishnu himself became Guard of King's palace.

Sri Vishnu also promised to make Mahabali as Indra in next Manvanthara (cycle of time).

Sri Vishnu blessed Mahabali that he could visit Earth once a year, hence the grand festival of ONAM which welcomes Raja Bali with much celebrations.

ONAM teaches us that if we fulfill our promises, are humble, we'll get MORE than what we desire or can expect.

Deities will check our worthiness time n again n we've to be humble n keep doing our Dharma.

To Ppl who are trying to vilify Sanatana Deities by depicting them as Evil (old trick of Missionaries, seen how they vilified Pagan Gods). Dont be imbicile to bring ur Caste system in our Gods.
