Remembered a friend’s story today and I want to share it with you. My friend was one of the most brilliant people when we were at University of Warwick. She graduated with a distinction and won every prize possible. She was best in her class and an all round super star! #Thread
After graduation, she got accepted to Oxford University (or maybe Cambridge, can’t remember) for her Masters. The only Problem was, she didn’t get a full scholarship and as an international student, the fees were too high for her to pay. She applied for grants etc but No luck.
She also applied for many jobs without any offers. Imagine a distinction student getting rejected EVERYWHERE. There was a particular job in South Africa she almost got after months of interviews but at the last stage, they chose someone else and she was heartbroken.
She eventually came back to Nigeria, confused and frustrated. She decided to do her NYSC and worked with a startup diligently but continued to apply for jobs that she had always wanted. She never gave up.
One day, she called me with amazing news. She got a job with one of the biggest Consulting firms in the world opening a Nigerian office. Out of about 600 candidates, she was the only one that was chosen and it came with a pretty impressive salary plus benefits.
2 years after working with the firm, they funded her MBA at Harvard Business School as part of their company policy. She also got a full scholarship from ANOTHER organization so she had extra money.
Imagine. Two years after losing an opportunity to do an MSc in Oxford, Her Harvard MBA was being double funded. I don’t even have the time to share the story of how she got the other scholarship but she was the last person interviewed and they practically waited for her.
The day she was to leave for the States, she was watching the news; the SA company she REALLY wanted to work for, the one that rejected her at the last round, had declared BANKRUPTCY. If she had gotten that job 2 years prior, she would have been jobless, not on her way to Harvard
When everything seemed to be working against her, we didn’t understand it. She was the smartest, brightest all rounder but it seemed nothing was working in her favor. Days of crying and being confused because of rejection after rejection. If only she could have seen the future.
Today, my friend is about to be Partner at this company. She is THRIVING and it’s like the past pain never happened. She travels all over the world. In fact, I’m sure when she reads this, she’ll find it difficult to see herself in this story. Old things have passed away.
We are starting a new month and I was led to share this story with you. It might seem like all hope is lost or nothing is working as planned. But I promise you, today’s disappointments will be a thing of the past. You will look back at today and just smile.
Begin to write your future story and put today’s disappointment in past tense because it won’t last forever. I declare that things will turn around for you. Stay diligent, serve where you can and trust God. It’ll happen for you.
