There’s nothing wrong in principle with taxing Google and Facebook to subsidise newspapers. But instead Australia has invented a totally imaginary economic exchange with no defined value, and tacked on some completely insane subclauses...
For example, Google and Facebook would have to give news publishers 28 days notice of any change to their algorithm that ‘might’ affect news ranking - which in practice means putting with a 28 day lag on almost anything. 🤦🏻‍♂️
This and AB5 in California are case studies of how to approach a real problem with bad regulation: make no attempt to understand the issues, shout down criticism with bluster and insults, and ignore a long list of unintended consequences. 🤦🏻‍♂️
