First of all, it is the acronym for “Simulations from ab Initio Approaches” — after all, in our group we perform atomistic simulations from the first-principles of quantum mechanics. But that is not all!

All the fellow Brazilians out there probably already noticed. Sabiá is the name of a very famous bird in Brazil (now the logo of the group starts to make sense?)

It is not only a bird you see everywhere if you are in Brazil (especially in the southeast), but also a bird that is a symbol for longing to return to Brazil. It has been featured in a very famous poem and a very famous song that many Brazilians know very well.

The poem “Canção do Exílio” (Song of exile) by Gonçalves Dias, written in 1843 can be looked up in Wiki if you are curious. Fun fact, it starts with an epigraph from a poem of W. Goethe (but Gonçalves was not in Germany when he wrote it ;-) ).

The song “Sabiá” (1968 Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque) is part of pop culture. There is a very famous recording by Elis Regina (best Brazilian singer of all times) and if you want to hear it in English, Frank Sinatra recorded a version with Jobim (all to be found in youtube).

I ( @dr_marossi) am sure that most countries have their sabiá, and that in science, even if we love where we are and what we do, many of us long to go back to where we grew up, and many times, that is very far away and not really possible. So this thread goes to you all <3
