My mother claims to vote for the "best candidate", and she has voted BJP since 2014.
She sees the BJP MLA build creches for children of vegetable vendors, she knows that the MLA's wife attends weddings in the slum where her domestic help lives.
To tar her as anti-Muslim is lazy. https://twitter.com/DearthOfSid/status/1300322250353115136
There are many like my mother.
They are not actively Islamophobic; till a decade back, they were actively secular.
The daily assault of on prime time television, and the covert anti-Muslim propoganda on WA does colour some responses, but those sentiments don't guide them.

People like my mother are driven by practical considerations- unemployment, inflation, decline in bank rates. They blame the previous goverment, because that's the story fed to them.
"Congress had 60 years, let's give BJP a chance", is what she says when I try to reason with her.
At election time, people like her evaluate who has done the most for the constituency. And that is where BJP scores- their cadres make sure people are aware of every thing they did.
She is upper middle class.

The middle class is entirely different- they vote for better prospects
