Just realized that other people didn’t grow up where family members sometimes squabbled over food because, if someone took too much, that meant someone else didn’t get enough.

That is a *revelation* to me. Maybe it shouldn’t be, but here we are.
But, let me tell you: it’s had a life-long impact on my values. Take only what you need. Use everything in moderation. Make sure there’s enough to go around. Always share.
(These might be good values to apply to our collective use of the planet)
And this is not sympathy-fishing. This is me cogitating on the values we internalize from our lived experiences.

And I wonder, if someone grew up with so much that it was easy to scrape food down the drain does that impact how they use things now, how they spend, how they share?
If you never have to think about the value of a thing – that it is possible that you may not have it tomorrow, even if you really want it - do you grow up taking everything for granted? How do you learn how to ration resources?
