It’ll be really interesting to see what impact ceasing social media referrals will have on news companies. Outlets that rely more on ads also tend to rely more on social media but those with a subscription focus tend to have (1/2)
Users click on their news sites home page much more often (and then into particular stories) and therefore rely much less on social media referrals
If in the end, this does lead to more people habitually checking their fave news site (instead of relying on social media links), then it could actually lead to an increase in ad revenue for news companies - but time will tell
The thing to watch is how frequently and how much time audiences spend on news sites vs Facebook as a result (sorry, I know the first tweet suggested there’d only be 2 posts in the thread)
As a bit of a proof point, all top 10 news sites for links don’t have a paywall (and therefore don’t focus on subs revenue) - sorry, last tweet in this thread, promise https://twitter.com/cameronwilson/status/1300599798421098497
