But the colonial trail strangely bypasses the #BeninBronzes in the Africa gallery which are announced by the enigmatic Weapon of Thrones as a reminder of the British punitive military expedition to Benin that saw the wholesale looting of the rare artefacts in the name of empire
And the #BritishMuseum’s plunder trail ignores the #Maqdala treasures that were looted in a military operation in Ethiopia by British forces and which are now not even on display in the museum
And of course #BritishMuseum remains silent in the case of the #ParthenonSculptures that were violently removed from the #Parthenon by Lord Elgin who abused his British diplomatic status to plunder rare classical antiquities from #Athens for the ‘benefit’ of the British Empire
And so the Citadel of Colonialism aka the #BritishMuseum basks in its own inglorious history, tone deaf to legitimate calls for the restitution of artefacts and cultural treasures that were ‘acquired’ in dubious circumstances. Enjoy your trail of plunder.
