Personal note: Might be a bit of a surprise to you if you have followed my summer biking adventures (Ottawa>Kingston>Ottawa>Laurentians>Ottawa) But this morning, was inspired (read till the end) and got the courage to share a pic from my trip to the uOttawa Heart Institute. /1
About 3 weeks ago, I woke up with what I thought was heart burn. Happens occasionally. But this time, it hurt to breathe. Breathing beyond 20% lung capacity felt ‘stabby’ and laborious. Took the day to relax. When it was almost bed time, lied down and everything went to hell. /2
I didn’t want to go to the ER, I don’t have a car and it was late. So, I called 9-1-1 to see what they would suggest. An ambulance was basically already on the way. Within minutes, these three incredible paramedics arrived with their full COVIE PPE. 🙏 /3
I was wired up, tested, they wondered if it was COVID (it wasn’t), and rushed me to the Ottawa Civic. My heartbeat was elevated (duh, I’m in an ambulance!) and pressure was a bit high. /4
The hospital did a battery of tests and figured I had pericarditis. Inflammation of the membrane around the heart. It happens. Sometimes a viral infection. Better than a heart attack! I was prescribed some meds. Sent home. (Then Bill Morneau quit - story for another day) /5
Went for an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) at the heart institute this morning. To my surprise, there were a handful of other (way more) athletic looking guys in the waiting room. Overheard how some ran to their appointments, others cycled as well. /6
Got my results by email within hours. All appears normal! My message: I’m in my early 30s. If you feel something, get the tests and the care you need. /7
Heart concerns can happen to anyone, any age, any fitness level. My CTV family reminded me of the importance of taking the time to take care of me. So, I want to pass that on. Take care yourself. Don’t let pride get in the way. ❤️/8
