Many (non-MD) friends have asked me about #colorectalcancer since the sad news about #ChadwickBoseman. Early onset CRC is becoming more common. I’m more surprised by how fully he was able to live DESPITE CRC rather than his young age at diagnosis. cancer pts are super-heroes! 1/ https://twitter.com/CCAlliance/status/1299821201167126534
Unfortunately this also highlights growing disparities with more Black and Latinx being diagnosed. I appreciated this read on intersection of #racism and #cancer: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/01/ibram-x-kendi-what-i-learned-cancer/579928/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwv7L6BRDxARIsAGj-34ozBwG5E7F6GNywEw6tWtEQDhJZxeaFvuQ3tqqMqRXIqbF-GAPB4V0aAr1_EALw_wcB from @DrIbram 2/
Know your risk and talk to your doctor if you have new or concerning symptoms, regardless of age. And on a systems level, we need more research into risk factors and biology of young onset CRC.
Adding on to this thread, colleagues Drs Piawah and Huang @UCSFCancer published this in @sfchronicle about the intersection of health disparities and colorectal cancer: https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/Oncologists-Chadwick-Boseman-s-death-from-15538705.php#article-comments
