I'm on a school's #RemoteLearning info meeting & a student asks "A web cam is expensive. My computer doesn't have one. How do I attend class w/ a camera?" @ChiPubSchools
Next question is about Study Hall- will you take attendance? Answer is yes. #RemoteLearning
In personal news... one of our computers has a non functioning mic & current headphones cause wobbly audio when my child speaks. We can get diff headphones but what about all those other kids who can't? (Yes, I am privileged to be able to have a computer for my child mic or no.)
First day of school question: Will teachers reach out ahead of time w/ Google Meets links? Answer: CPS will create these links, they believe tomorrow. (One of my kids received all his links today.)
Q: How will studio classes or lab classes be conducted? A: Teachers have that info. Teachers will give instructions on supplies & so forth. (This is a HS, BTW.)
They still haven't answered the web cam question, BTW.
Ques about counselors & times they might be available? Also can they meet 1 on 1 w/ kids? A: Office Hours available. Not sure how comfortable counselors might feel re: face to face meetings.
THere were a bunch of questions about counselor availability, BTW.
Q about standardized testing. A: SAT for Srs is Wed, Sept 23- this is an in person at school test, BTW. They said they'll let everyone know about the other standardized tests once they know from CPS.
Ques about lunch. Answer is 30 minute lunch in between first 2 periods of day & 2nd 2 periods of day. It is 30 minutes. Basically a block schedule.
Q: Will Driver's Ed be offered this year? A: Class course yes, behind the wheel not sure. (To catch you up, CPS Behind The Wheel has not restarted since it shut down in March. ISBE did offer guidelines on this in June.)
Good question (I'm a mom too): Is there a time limit as to when teachers can post assignments on Google Drive? Principal says they will make sure everything is reasonable for students. There are student expectations & teacher expectations.
Another good q about PE classes. How will this work? (This also came up in our FB group today.) Live instruction by PE teachers & will allow teachers to comm with students about what this looks like. PE uniforms? Probably not, but might be guidelines on clothing to be worn.
Are student transit cards available this year? (Ventra cards) Yes. Available in main office.
Students asking about student behavior guidelines. "I don't have a desk. Is it ok to be in class on my bed?" Dress code? Eating during class? Answer: No eating. No bed laying, find somewhere to sit. Trying to prep you for life & the world. Understand you are going to school.
Q: How will 60 min live instructions work? Lecturing? How about asynchronous? A: Up to each individual teacher. A teacher is know saying: I'll use small groups via breakout rooms. This is set up in most classrooms so imagines most teachers will do this.
I think they will not answer that webcam question. I'm not sure there is an answer. (I did submit it as a question as a reminder that it was never answered.) What about mic capabilities? Headphones? Desks? Chairs? #RemoteLearning Printers, paper, ink?
Going to end this thread with this. Thanks for taking the time to get the context & read this really great, real questions from mostly students to a school re: #RemoteLearning.
