Yep.

@chris_labarthe is making a few mistakes in his analysis:

- underestimating how much guys in the trades make
- overestimating the cost of living outside of urban cores.

A welder can make $80k, his wife might make $60k or more as a teacher or dental hygienist >>>
5/

...and that's assuming they don't commute into the city or suburbs and earn a fair bit more.

Out in the country they can live for maybe $2k/mo.

They don't have student loans to speak of. Taxes are low.

That $80k pickup truck is $1,500 per month.

So the family has tons of money left over for ARs, nice optics, training classes, snow mobiles, or whatever else they want.

I'd bet a rural welder has far more disposable income than a <checks notes> "writer in San Francisco".

A certain type of person has been told "you need to go to college; you don't want to flip burgers for a living, do you?"

...and then this kind of person borrows $150,000 to get an English degree.

is-ought

in the world WE live in USG has decreed that student loans are not dischargeable, and banks make loans under that standard and students take them

(I personally think the policy is a TERRIBLE one, as bad as "employer provided health care is norm")

an actual welder tags in to my disagreement with @chris_labarthe and confirms that my numbers are about right https://twitter.com/Bobthewelding1/status/1300553570295730177

Btw, part of the reason rural people often have $50k or $60k pickups is that their housing cost is so low, that they can have that already locked down (a full house, for a mortgage about half per month what someone in SF pays for a 1 bedroom apartment) & have cash left over

A San Francisco based writer drowning in student debt, eating bugs, living in the pod, chanting "WORKING CLASS PEOPLE DON'T LIVE WELL !!!!" is _exactly_ like a 400 lb body positive woman mocking thin / curvy women for being unhealthy / unrealistic https://twitter.com/Advanced_COBOL/status/1300771662946856961
