Every time a crank resigns from Labour a little bit of it is being saved. One resignation at a time. Not just because they are leaving. But because they know they know they are no longer welcome.
Under Corbyn it didn't matter if a crank was expelled, they still felt welcome.
They felt they were being expelled in name, but deep down the leadership agreed with them.
The thing about extreme politics is that its often whats not said that is most powerful. Signals given without the words ever being muttered.
No matter what Jeremy Corbyn could muster saying, the cranks knew he didn't believe it. So they went along with almost anything. He was so vacuous and spoke in such general terms that cranks could project whatever belief they wanted onto him. Including antisemitism.
And his absolute inability to talk about it in language or tone they might oppose, only strengthened their view that he was on their side.
Its why this issue was never going to be fixed by tinkering with the rule book or expelling a few more members. It is a cultural problem and the leadership sets the culture. Both in language and through signals. Its time for the left to police its borders.
Labour has a big role in that. But a bigger responsibility sits with @PeoplesMomentum. I hold no hope they will do anything. But ultimately they are now the gatekeepers of Labours left flank. They must decide whether or not cranks should be welcome or not.
Labour has always been a broad church. But previously even the left set a line. Momentum must decide whether are with the Assangists, Antisemites, anti vaxxers and other conspiratorial bigoted nuts should be part of their movement.
