Seeing @MayorBowser lend credence to the antisemitic conspiracy theory that protesters are being funded broke what little of my heart I have left to break. A popular alt-right theory was just publicly supported by a democratic mayor. #DCProtests #BowserResign https://twitter.com/mayorbowser/status/1300469057087438852
This same theory led to the Tree Of Life shooting 2 years ago in which 11 Jews were brutally murdered in their place of worship. A theory Trump proposed in an interview 2 days before we watched a member of the @Athletics’ coaching staff perform a Nazi salute with no consequence
My concern is that the rise in antisemitism is largely ignored b/c many Jews look white. This same willful blindness allows for expressions of hate to be waved away without consequence or even much public discourse. So let me share with you a few of my personal experiences:
When my grandfather died we entered the cemetery through gates flanked by armed guards due to the constant vandalism & threats. Gravestones were continuously being desecrated and there were also credible threats of arson to contend with.
When grandmother passed away we met with the rabbi in a boarded up office and entered the synagogue through a doorway covered in swastikas and hate, past windows that had been smashed in. The guards at the cemetery had been replaced by a heavy iron fence.
When I lived in Hungary my mom gave explicit instructions not to put my last name on the buzzer to the apartment so that no one would know a Jew lived there. I didn’t really understand why until I was violently jumped in the street by a neonazi.
This thread has worn me out. I say this not to ask for pity but to try to illuminate the multitude of ways in which hate has infiltrated our world. It starts with a casual suggestion at a press conference, where does it end?
