I was so excited when Disney announced that they would be making a live action version of their classic movie Mulan...
... until I learned that (1) it was written and directed by white people and (2) Disney+ is charging $29.99 for “premier access” to the film, on top of the subscription fee (while Hamilton and Black Is King are included with a subscription only).
Black Panther isn’t directed by a white person. Crazy Rich Asians isn’t directed by a white person. white people were involved in both screenplays, but there were also Black and Malaysian writers, respectively.
similar to the live action version of Aladdin being written and directed by white people, what’s the point of having an all-Asian cast if they are speaking and are directed by white voices?

at the end of the day, the culture is diluted and it’s all lip service.
growing up first-generation Asian-American, Mulan, albeit fictional, was the sole and prominent female Asian role model in children’s mainstream media.

Disney has ample opportunity and resources to do better and be better, but they still don’t.
