ANTI-FASCISM - A READING LIST

Want to learn about the history of anti-fascism? Want some suggestions of what to read?

Then this is the thread for you...
Some general histories first, starting with @Mark__Bray ‘Antifa: A Handbook.’

This is an excellent historical overview with a good selection of interviews & quotes from anti-fascist activists.

Probably the best starting point for most people.
The ‘Antifa Comic Book’ by Gord Hill is also a great basic historical introduction.

The illustrations are brilliant & narrative traces development & evolution of anti-fascism in Italy, Germany, UK, Spain, France, Scandinavia, Russia, US, Canada etc
Two very good activist accounts are:

‘Militant Anti-Fascism: A Hundred Years of Resistance’ by M Testa

‘Physical Resistance: A Hundred Years of Anti-Fascism’ by Dave Hann.

Both focus on UK but also have some discussion of Italy, Germany & Spanish anti-fascism
These two academic edited collections focus on *global* history of anti-fascism as well as links with anti-imperial campaigns

‘Rethinking Antifascism’ ed. by Garcia et al

‘Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective ’ ed. by @kasperbrasken Copsey & Featherstone
History of hunting down Nazi war criminals is subject of these valuable books

‘Hunting Evil: The Nazi War Criminals Who Escaped & the Quest to Bring Them to Justice’ by @guywalters

‘Hunting the Truth: Memoirs of Beate and Serge Klarsfeld’

‘The Nazi Hunters’ by @AndrewNagorski
UK Anti-Fascist history is extensively documented.

Best overview is ‘Anti-Fascism in Britain’ 2nd. ed by Nigel Copsey which covers 1920s to present

Hodgson ‘Fighting Fascism’ & edited books ‘Varieties of Anti-Fascism’ & ‘Remembering Cable Street’ are all good on interwar period
Main anti-fascist group in UK in late 1940s was 43 Group.

Former member Morris Beckman wrote a valuable history of the group which has now been supplanted by @dansonabend excellent ‘We Fight Fascists’

@Livesrunning provides useful scholarly historical context in several books
Rock Against Racism was formed in 1976 & Anti-Nazi League in 1977. They led political & cultural struggle against NF

‘Never Again’ by @Livesrunning is definitive account of both

‘Anti-fascist’, ‘Reminiscences of RAR’ & ‘Walls Come Tumbling Down’ are superb oral histories
Anti-Fascist Action formed in 1985 & led physical opposition against far right for 15 years

‘Beating the Fascists’ by Sean Birchall is inside story by AFA activists

‘No Retreat’ by Hann & @anancara gives history of ‘squads’ expelled from SWP who formed AFA’s Northern Network
Also active in 1970s & 1980s we’re Asian youth movements who were at the sharp end of struggles against police & institutional racism as well as far right

‘Black Star: Britain's Asian Youth Movements’ by Anandi Ramamurthy is a great overview & should be read alongside A Sivandan
‘No Platform: A History of Anti-Fascism, Universities and the Limits of Free Speech’ by @evanishistory is an invaluable account of history of practice of ‘No Platform’ from militant anti-fascists in 1930s & 1940s to student groups in universities
US Anti-fascist history is now being better documented

‘US Anti-Fascism Reader’ ed. by Mullen & Vials is a useful overview

‘Haunted by Hitler’ by Vials look at interwar anti-fascism

‘Death to Fascism’ by @JohnPEnyeart tells story of Louis Adamic, a pioneering anti-fascist

‘American Antifa’ by @professor_stas is best academic account of contemporary US anti-fascist activism
Two useful edited books on contemporary anti-fascist strategies in N America

‘Confronting Fascism: Discussion Documents for a Militant Movement’ by Don Hamerquist, J. Sakai, and Mark Salotte

‘Fighting Fascism: Anti-fascism, Free Speech and Political Violence’ by @c4ssdotorg
A few regional anti-fascist studies to mention

‘Anti-fascism in the Nordic Countries’ ed. by @kasperbrasken Nigel Copsey, Johan A. Lundin

‘Alerta! Alerta! Snapshots of Europe's Anti-fascist Struggle’ by @P_Strickland_ on contemporary anti-fascism in Europe
Hope folks found this useful.

There are hundreds of books on Spanish Civil War & International Brigades, on Italian & German resistance to Fascism & Nazism & on partisans.

They’re not mentioned here but are obviously part of anti-fascist history & future threads!
