10. EMBER ISLAND PLAYERS/"THE BOY IN THE ICEBERG"

"The Boy In The Iceberg" is HI-larious & EIP is quite possibly the best recap episode on TV. Too many jokes to list, but efficiently gives us final character beats before launching into the finale. Also reminds us of the stakes: Aang & Zuko dying........ Avatar State, Yip Yip!

9. THE AVATAR LEITMOTIF

A subtle theme that plays throughout the series, this leitmotif is rephrased and referenced at the most emotional and triumphant moments in the story.

8. ASSAULT ON THE EARTH KING'S PALACE

We wish Avatar had more of these full-team assaults—the bending is EPIC. The gaang swiftly topples the innermost defenses of the Earth Kingdom. Oh yeah. Toph flipping the stairs into a slide is why she's the greatest earthbender ever.

7. BATTLE IN THE CRYSTAL CATACOMBS

TWO crazy things define this fight, in addition to the bending and great 1-on-1s. The 1st is Zuko defecting BACK to the Fire Nation, and the 2nd, Azula blasting Aang in the back rendering him only mostly dead, which is still partially alive.

6. MAKO IWAMATSU AS IROH

Mako's performance not only gave Uncle Iroh warmth and wisdom, but imbued the entire series with a sense of gravitas and authenticity. The series would not have been the same without him. RIP.

5. APPA

Appa, a ten ton sky bison, is hands down one of the greatest things about Avatar. That he is a true character and more than mere conveyance, is one of Avatar's greatest writing feats!!

4. AANG'S FINAL VERDICT

"FIRE LORD OZAI. YOU AND YOUR FOREFATHERS HAVE DEVASTATED THE BALANCE OF THIS WORLD. AND NOW, YOU SHALL PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE."

4. WHAT a thing to SAY before an execution. Pay back for Ozai's "YOU'RE WEAK. JUST LIKE THE REST OF YOUR PEOPLE. THEY DID NOT DESERVE TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD, IN MY WORLD!..." You feel the wrath of a thousand Avatars in Aang's voice as he gets ready to swiss cheese this Fire Lord.

3. THE AVATAR CYCLE

"I have mastered the elements a thousand times in a thousand lifetimes. Now, I must do it once again." The tentpole of Avatar's worldbuilding, the avatar cycle is an ancient, mysterious, and perfect pattern linked to nature.

3. It grounds the series in eastern philosophy and creates a myriad of past/future stories on which to speculate. Though the avatar cycle is perfect, each avatar is a flawed human being. It's the contrast between the individual and the divine that makes this show feel monumental.

2. AANG VS. OZAI

Yes, this list is "season 3"/"series finale" heavy, but the end of ATLA was THAT EXCITING. As soon as Aang unlocks the Avatar State, the battle goes from tense and unhinged to a wild display of power. The Beard Grab! The Sphere O'Death! The Energybending!!

And finally, @ruijisjiang and I get to share our absolute favorite thing from Avatar: The Last Airbender!

1. ZUKO AND AZULA'S AGNI KAI

Prince Zuko's character arc ends exactly how it began: with an Agni Kai. The stakes are high. Not only must Zuko take down his sister for the title of Fire Lord, he has to do it during a supernatural, once-in-a-lifetime, firebending-enhancing event.

This gets the nod over Aang and Ozai's battle because of its emotional significance, beautiful soundtrack, and visually stunning choreography. Zuko's self-sacrifice and Azula's heartbreaking defeat make this fight the best duel—and best moment—in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
