I’m not a traditional academic. My path has been anything but straightforward. Same goes for my journey to publishing this bk.

I want to take this opp to thank the professional community of historians who guided me these last 15+ yrs. Without them, this book would not exist. 2/
And for grad students #onhere who may be curious about that journey, I thought it might be valuable to answer: What did it take, how long did it take, and, more importantly, WHO did it take to get to a published book? #phdchat 3/
1st thanks to @ParisNoire who introduced me to #FrenchHistory via the late Susanna Barrows & Tyler Stovall when I was an undergrad @UCBerkeley back in 2004. Their very existence convinced me that I too might find a place for myself in the field of history where I could belong 4/
Thanks also to my entire diss committee: Phil Nord, Margot Canaday, Bonnie Smith, Claire Zalc, and @DavidAvromBell who offered feedback on the project while I was a grad student from 2007-2014

5/
And to Emmanuelle Saada and the late Rachel Fuchs who rooted for me throughout my graduate career, opened doors for me, and so much more 6/
A special shout out to @sarahehorowitz who explained to me what an academic conference was when I was a 3rd year grad student. She coached me on how to create and submit a panel proposal before my very first @thesfhs conference in 2010!

7/
After I left academia in 2015, I benefitted from the #friendtorship of Minayo Nasiali and Richard Hopkins, who showed me how to write a book proposal and @ChristyPichichero who offered me professional community as one of only a handful of women of color in the field.

An enormous shout out to @DannaAgmon who was so warm & welcoming towards me when I was just beginning my DEI consulting career in 2018. She opened many doors to me, incl. introducing me to the amazing @JudithDeGroat @clubatomique @MeghanKRoberts @RebeccaPScales @Laprofmme

Since 2018, I have been astonished to find a generous community of #twitterstorians #onhere who consistently uplift my work and my voice. Chief among them are @ParisNoire (again) @jessie_hewitt @dr_tgpeterson @profmarylewis @aiross0 @DrSepinwall @carolinevsequin

10/
Finally, I thank @danedels who connected me to my brilliant editor Emily Andrew @CornellPress in 2017.

Emily showed me how to translate a dissertation into a book, and made me rewrite my introduction until it was worthy of actually BEING IN a book 😂🤣🥰

Again, this thread is only the professional community of historians who supported me.

Nothing is possible without the love of friends, families, & partners who restore us daily and remind us who we really are especially when the world tries to tell us otherwise ❤️

Graduate students, your career may take twists & turns, & you may ultimately decide not to publish anything.

The most important thing to remember in this world: Don’t ever let someone else’s values become your own #phdchat
