Fast fashion definitely has skewed our perception of the value of clothes and garment makers
Clothes are expensive esp when you pay everyone involved in the supply chain a livable wage and the thing is, not consumer can afford (new clothes, not secondhand) which is a reality and it’s valid
It’s definitely a complex issue where clothes are both necessity and luxury but what I’m getting at is try to change how you see the value of clothing because it’s not as cheap and disposable they’re made to seem
And it’s at the cost of predominantly women of color in the global south. Their skills and labor are worth so much more than the price tag companies slap on their work. Speaking outside of monetary value, sewing is hard and they’re pretty fucking talented and deserve better
A brand new $10 shirt at retail price is not... okay. It’s objectively not good besides for your own personal budget
And some affordable solutions besides buying secondhand is learning how to make our own clothes and care for them to increase their longevity. Like hang dry more often, etc. someone made a rly good thread on garment care, if I can find it I’ll link it
This thread is riddled with grammatical errors but you get my point and tbh I’m just word vomiting my thoughts while I have to wait for something at work
