ableism in the owl house fandom and why yall need to keep your mouths closed sometimes: a thread
so to begin i’d like to start of this thread by saying that i have adhd and i have experienced this firsthand, so i am going to be talking about my personal experiences with ableism here and trying to make it a more broad thread that encompasses other people’s experiences as well
so what exactly is ableism??? well it’s a bit hard for me to put it into words but it’s basically discrimination against disabled people, which includes mental disabilities and physical disabilities.
i’m going to be talking about ableism against the neurodivergent people in this fandom, so lets begin, shall we?

first of all; neurodivergent people can not control their hyperfixations. at all. we have no control over which shows we hyperfixate on, which games, which characters
or anything like that. so to tell neurodivergent people that they’re focusing on a character they hyperfixated on too much is inherently ableist. in general i think that we should stop policing which characters people focus on because it’s just kinda gross in general to be like
“you focus on this character too much, you need to appreciate the other characters” because neurodivergent people ARE appreciating the other characters, they just cant help hyperfixating on one character alone.
hyperfixations are not super bad and i’m not going to paint them like that. yes hyperfixations can be harmful but a lot of them are good too; that doesn’t make them any less taxing on our mental stability though, and making us feel guilty for not being able to stop thinking about
a certain character is only going to aid in ruining it, since we often experience emotions (including guilt) on a much higher scale than neurotypical people.

please be aware of people’s hyperfixations!! even if you’re neurodivergent and you don’t hyperfixate on a character
you still understand what it’s like to be hyperfixated on something.

i had more to say but while i was writing this thread i forgot my other point... so this is awkward 😥😥 but if i have anything to add later than i will!

do not give your opinion if you are neurotypical, i
promise you i do not want to hear it
