Gunbuster thread ! (If I have enough interesting things to say about it)
One of the many reasons why this opening scene is so famous is probably because it sets up the fundamental themes and techniques of Anno's work : childood, first-person perspective and narration, and telling a story through stills that are in fact full of meaning
This is a simple thing, really, but having different actions happening at different levels of depth in the image is always a sign for a director who actually cares about the settings
Probably something Anno got from Tomino, who in turn got it from Takahata
(Noriko cute)
The actual moment Anno discovered the fisheye lens
Anime eyes were never better than this. We stan Haruhiko Mikimoto
This is basically a Dezaki shot, but even Dezaki wished he could do shots like this one
Random anime fans : mecha aren't a metaphor for sex !
Anno *breathes heavily*
Densetsu Kyoujin Ideon #29, Yoshiyuki Tomino (1980)
Top Wo Nerae ! Gunbuster #01, Hideaki Anno (1988)
Shinseiki Evangelion #04, Hideaki Anno (1995)
Everybody talks only about the Buster machine, but these little plump guys deserve more love
The more I think about how nonsensical this is, the more I love it
(Was it already a Berserk reference in 1988 ?)
If Anno deserves to be remembered for just one thing, it's keeping alive the Dezaki "to be continued" tradition
Gunbuster/Evangelion
(Can't find the Eva one for the third one but I think you know which one I mean)
Aaah, yes, I always like my physics classes to be accompanied by 80's pop music
I want that Excelion teapot.....
Whereas most mecha have a panoramic vision feature, Gunbuster's intial machines are full of panels and have just a small window to see outside. Which makes it that much more claustrophobic, precisely what's Anno aiming for in the initial battle
