One of the many reasons why this opening scene is so famous is probably because it sets up the fundamental themes and techniques of Anno& #39;s work : childood, first-person perspective and narration, and telling a story through stills that are in fact full of meaning
This is a simple thing, really, but having different actions happening at different levels of depth in the image is always a sign for a director who actually cares about the settings
