Things we're talking about in health policy class right now:

It's not enough to sit with someone who is oppressed and express empathy toward them. There also needs to be a commitment to work towards eliminating the root cause of the oppression that's causing them pain.

Imagine you're a nurse working in an emergency department at a local hospital. Every night parents stream into the ER with dead children lying limp in their arms, each child killed by a defective ceiling fan that fell on their head.

Your parents own the ceiling fan manufacturer that made ALL of those fans. You sit with each grieving parent and comfort them. You demonstrate empathy and compassion. Is that enough or do you have a responsibility to do more?

This is an imperfect example, obviously. But it speaks to the limits of empathy and compassion. Empathy and compassion without action are inadequate.
