(THREAD): Seeing as the PM can't seem to figure out the educational mess he's created and just why going back to school is a controversy, I thought I'd make a thread telling him.
1. We know there is little risk to children. We really, really, really do. See what I'm doing?
Repeating a word over and over again, just like you!
2. We want to go back to school. You're fighting this argument by yourself. We do. Teachers, students, parents would send their children BUT the main problems are adult-related. Why is that so difficult to understand?
Adults, adults, adults- the adults that teach the children, that run the school, the adults they come to, the cleaners, the staff, the grandparents. The risk of transmitting and carrying COVID to adults, especially those vulnerable, matters. It ain't rocket science.
3. @GavinWilliamson, you said missing schools risks your child's future and "life chances". Don't use gaslighting rhetoric with parents. Can I tell you what risk children's futures? "Mutant algorithms"-i.e, you. There's something I learned in English Literature called irony.
4. Trust. You expect a population to trust the government who threw a "protective ring" around care homes (and then orders of "Do Not Resuscitate"), a "safety net" for Y13 as you brought them "robust" A-level results, stood by your advisor who clearly broke the rules. Really?
5. Funding. Instead of growing a "magic money tree" Theresa May never said existed to help the likes of Nando's and Spoons, why don't you provide funding for schools for the extra cleaning materials and cleaners they'll require? Just a thought.
6. For someone without morals, you certainly make everything about "moral duty", And then you talk to us about our "moral duty" to send children back? To go back to offices? Come on.
7. Social distancing is not possible in a classrooms for so many schools and I don't know how many times to tell you this so maybe I'll say it one more time for good measure: SOCIAL DISTANCING IS NOT POSSIBLE IN A PACKED CLASSROOM.
8. Be ready for the pictures though. Flawless socially-distanced classrooms will dominate the pages, happy faces all around to fit the gov narrative. Be wary.
9. In case no-one's told you yet, we're a bit frustrated. Students. Headteachers. Parents. When have you ever shown an ounce of respect for the education sector? Delivering news on mock appeals the night before results, giving a "Plan B" on a Friday night. Before a Bank Holiday.
10. But no, the teacher bashing will continue. I'd also like to point out it being hypocritical to release guidance on weekends/Friday evenings, when press conferences were stopped on weekends- of course it was about "the ratings". Sure.
10. Universities. They're overstretched due to the mess you left them to, so would you like to explain how they're going to function in 4 weeks time when they're inundated with 1 million students? This'll be the next blow for the Class of 2020. It's coming, we know it, you do too
11. Planning isn't your forte. We aren't an "exemplar in preparedness. But think. Think again. Think about the Y13s and Y11s, #alevels2021- there's no contingency plan, no thought, no guidance. Maybe I should just expect it on the Friday night before the exams commence.
12. You don't see what others see, you don't see the private candidates facing their 4th year of A-level study, people no longer trust your government, the Class of 2020 reads about universities potentially becoming the "care homes" of the second wave which makes me shiver.
13. Now, I know you like your "memos short", so I shall retire from hitting my keyboard in frustration, but if someone can care and wish they could help, why can't you? You do get it, you do- you just don't care.
It's the sinking feeling of knowing some things could go very, very wrong, and being unable to do anything to change it.
