Time for the good, the bad, and the ugly from yesterday's Celtic vs Motherwell game. The 3-0 victory was obviously welcomed after the midweek debacle, but let's take a look at whether the performance matched the result. All stats courtesy of Wyscout.
In the 18 games vs Motherwell over the prior 5 seasons Celtic avg 1.93 non-penalty xG vs 0.69, on 20 vs 7 shots. Motherwell entered the game avg just 1.02 npxG in 1st 5 league games. They rank 520 in SPI vs 156 for Ferencvaros.
Yesterday's game Celtic 1.50 xG vs 0.33 on 15 vs 5 shots. 7 of 15 were low xG shots from outside the box. Motherwell w/o formerly best player and also an injured Donnelly. Accounting for how much worse Motherwell are vs Ferencvaros and past 5 seasons, not a good performance IMO.
The good was dominated by the last 33 minutes, where Celtic generated xG at rate of about 3 per 90 minutes. Went 3-4-2-1 for about 8 minutes then 3-5-2 for final 24. Avg pass map for game showed a Bizzaro World inversion with a cluster in the right half space. At least not left!
The bad continued with issues which remain unaddressed. Taylor and Brown offered little in attack or creatively. McGregor(0 xG/0.08 xA) while devastating on the counterattack, was shackled next to Brown for most of the game. Christie, Ntcham, and Moi were all pretty ineffective.
A significant amount of creative and attacking output from open play came from Jullien and Ajer, which is a credit to them. However, I am skeptical of that being reliable against better opponents. Jullien accounted for 0.45 of 1.50 xG and none from headers.
The ugly was what appears to be an attack on my Twitter account, as it appears my analysis of Celtic is unwelcomed by some. I've been accused of posting "private information." Parts or all of this thread may be targeted as ones Saturday and Sunday were.
The reporting process has resulted in multiple 12 hour lockdown of this account and has indicated it could be banned permanently. I have submitted a formal inquiry but who knows. 2020 - what a time to be alive. End.
