It's time I commented on something I've not really addressed yet - and that's exactly WHY I think it's so important to refer to churches and cathedrals as "sexy" and "chonkers" - because, yes, it's genuinely how I speak about them irl - but there's also a deeper purpose here.
I've had conversations with various people, including members of clergy, who want to know WHY I'm saying "cathedrals are sexy" - they ask "why can't you say they're awesome? or cool? or beautiful?"

And firstly, buddy, "cathedrals are awesome" sounds terrible. SECONDLY;
Saying "cathedrals are sexy" is jarring. Using the word "sexy" to refer to them is striking. Talking knowledgeably about cathedral architecture, and then turning around and calling it "chonky" is startling. It is so unlike what people expect. And that's important.
People fail to visit old churches and cathedrals, not because they're uninterested, but because they're uncomfortable. They're scared that by being themselves they will break a rule, somehow. That they will be judged, somehow.

By calling them "sexy" I break those rules for them.
In saying: "Cathedrals are sexy. That pillar is chonky" I'm not just saying that.

I'm saying: "You are welcome as yourself. Your response to these buildings are valid. Come in, and enjoy them, without fear of judgement."

I'm saying: "You are welcome. All of you is welcome."
And, in all honesty, cathedrals ARE sexy.
I do a similar thing when I take friends to visit art galleries and museums. I make sure to point out the silly stuff, so they feel comfortable doing it too.

"That statue looks like a butt." gives them permission to engage with the art and history on their terms.
