This time last week I was a relieved chap. For many years I have known about Harry Thurlow. He served in the Leeds Pals during the Great War, 15/896 Corporal and later Sergeant. He took part in the attack on Serre 1/7/16 and survived both the Somme and the war....more.
Anyhow about 10 days ago @TerrierMcD saw them on eBay and flagged them up to me as a possible relative. Before residing in Leeds harry's family lived in Laytham, E Yorks, near Pocklington not far from where my family came from. Fortunately my bid was successful...more.
Is Harry a relative? I need to do some digging but a high chance? There is a family resemblance. Harry got married to his wife Annie and gave his address as colsterdale Camp, the Pals training area. Annie wore a leeds Pals cap badge instead of a spray of flowers....more.
After the war Harry worked for the Leeds City Tramways and had a daughter in 1920. In later life he attended many Leeds pals reunions and sadly as they grew old, old chums funerals but only after polishing his shoes really well. He died in 1968 at the age of 80....more.
Now I bought the medals from a chap who lived in Driffield, again where my mother lived before marriage. He sourced from a lady who got them from Harry's daughter? She provided a little background about Harry's life.....more.
So is Harry a relative. Uncommon surname. Close E York’s connections and a resemblance? Work to be done but either way I am@a lucky man to be the custodian of his medals, photo and his Christmas tin. I added the original badges. So grateful to @TerrierMcD
The photo shows Harry and it is possible to see the distinct Leeds Pals shoulder title. Even if not a relative to have the medals of a soldier whose name you have known for so many years is special. Co-incidences? I think not. #Leedspals
