I have been thinking so much about #Rakgadi.I am also sure that I wish it had not happened,I am sure i wish i hadn't seen it, and that it isn’t trending. Kodwa ke we are here.
I want to blame the media also, but of course as consumers, our appetite for Black ugliness and humiliation is also a reason why this is trending. I involve myself in this appetite.
All of it is ugly, the big “reveal” is ugly, the water-bottle and physical fight is ugly. Its all ugly
Some of the responses, make me even more sad.Kubi kwa Black shem
Some of the ways we are using the language of Black liberation politics -to give effect to some seriously regressive things is not okay MaAfrika.
The Rakgadi, Ndodakazi, Dabawo, Sister etc narrative as inherently evil?is lazy and old.We have experiences with each other sure, but we can’t deny this is a narrative that seeks to vilify Black women, again.
It also does this strange thing, where -when a Ndodakazi is being vilified, she is not imagined as a wife elsewhere, and a mother elsewhere, and therefore with ndodakazi’s of her own.
Thinking about people as whole people, surely will help push us into spaces where we think structurally, and not be okay vilifying individuals and look deeply at what is wrong with how we marriage and how we family
Its in the same family, of gold-digger makoti, lazy makoti, makoti making someone not take care of their children. So, no, I am not choosing “fathers sides”.Often women marrying into families are assumed to have these ugly characteristics even before we meet them.
On the other side, we are using our language to Somehow trying to equate her “reveal” to people speaking out about violence haybo. This is an ugly reach.
Then of course on this side we also have the “her feelings are valid" and she must not be silenced”. Haybo, having feelings doesn’t make every situation and scenario appropriate for those feelings.
I pray that family grieves and heals. Rakgadi should bury her brother, the wife should bury her husband, the children should bury their father, the best solution to this – cant be that anyone in this ecosystem is cancelled.
