Freelancing has been magical for me.
Looking back, everything I know or do is connected to freelancing work from initial days.

A thread 🧵
My 1st freelance work was a data entry operator on MTurk- 2nd year of college. - 2006

I later used some of that knowledge to build the data tagging team in my previous venture. We were the most efficient at this.
My 2nd freelance work was PR for a classifieds startup. 2008.

I ended up doing Crawlers + SEO + BD.

Wrote my first blog post for @nextbigwhat
https://nextbigwhat.com/the-secret-behind-incoms-traffic/
🚀Got a backlink for my client.
🚀That article became a sensation.
All remote.
I met the founder in US -2017.
3rd freelance was SEO for a book store.2009.
I met this client doing BD for client #2.

I knew nothing about books, so I studied Flipkart for that. I became an instant fan.
Wrote this 2 yrs later.

Got me an invitation to meet @binnybansal @_sachinbansal
My 4th freelance work was writing for @nextbigwhat
I was paid a part of the ad revenue from my articles.

Wrote 250 articles but 90% of the rev. came from 1 article, that was about 😜 http://Savitabhabhi.com  - I had spoken to the creator for doing brand placement for client #1.

I used to get comments on that article with addresses to send DVDs. I morphed the title to win SEO later. 🤫

😇Followed it up with a

I later started freelancing for coding and wrote crawlers for about 100 sites.

Whole of my previous startup was around crawling data from ecommerce sites.
The (failed) PR experience from client #1 helped me launch Freecharge.
We were covered every where. Every online tech/telecom blog in India, few newspapers, the biggest Indian online portal, a TV channel and a Business magazine. In first 4 months.
Total cost was INR 5K+taxes.
The experience from 4th freelance helped me talk to all ecommerce sites during my work at @Zipdial.
I had spoken to engineers at all major ecommerce companies in India. The difference between the good and bad was so apparent and reflects in their success/failure even today.
From 2016-18 I freelanced again.
This time for larger companies that gave me access to board rooms with billionaire(INR) directors.
Including a now public company where I am on board now.
In 2018, the knowledge was adding up and the market gap was clear.
Took some time to figure out the right approach to launch @RefrensApp in 2019.
. @RefrensApp is an attempt to capture all the learnings from
freelancing over 14yrs.

Trying to replicate all my experiences from freelancing, that created magic for me, for millions others.
It will be beyond just finding your next work.
It will be your network.
