Reflecting while writing an adult safeguarding presentation on how well people learn through stories. Humans through generations have used story-telling as a tool to effectively impart information & narrative-based medicine can be shown to improve outcomes.
These are some of the books I have recently read that have increased my knowledge & understanding of safeguarding issues.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo - Christy Lefteri. @christylefteri
An important book for these times, with immigration causing headlines. It also helped my understanding of the impact of bereavement, PTSD, rape, somatic illness.
Beautifully written as an extra bonus.
With the end in mind - Kathryn Mannix. @drkathrynmannix
Superb account of the very best palliative care. I have used her description of how people die when talking to palliative patients & their family regularly since reading it. Practice changing book.
Fragile Lives - Stephen Westaby.
Fascinating autobiography by an eminent heart surgeon; made me reflect on advance care planning. he carried out huge operations & gained quality of life where I may have thought a conservative approach was more appropriate.
The vanishing act of Esme Lennox - #MaggieOFarrell
Long term consequences of institutionalisation, impact of adverse childhood experiences.
As always, beautifully written.
Platform 7 - @louisedoughty
Example of coercive control, I have recommended this to people I am concerned about & found reading it can be more helpful than a Patient Information Leaflet to help women reflect their own relationship may be unhealthy.
The Rabbit Girls - @AnnaEllory
Again, an excellent description of the impact of Coercive control, but also the effects of trauma, oppression & abuse.
Literature is bursting with education for us to use to better understand the issues we face both in practice & daily life.
Books are a valuable learning tool for doctors & patients.
My 'to read' list gets ever longer as people bring me excellent recommendations!
