This tweet mentioned the very fact which we don't dare to speak cause of the secularism imposed on our minds but it has also brought some really bad memories of my school days.
I was in 8th standard. Was living in a small village of Maharashtra. Our village had a river. https://twitter.com/not_sameera/status/1300122130202288128
It used to be a scrap yard on the other side of river. Hence for obvious reasons it became ghetto of peacefuls. A slum developed in know time followed by beef shops. Gangs of jobless teenagers and youths start roaming. Nobody would venture in that are without a compelling reason.
For some unknown reason - government (mid 90s) decided to develop that area. So new government offices, Public health centre came up in those areas along residential quarters for employees. But even with that, it was still a no-go zone for people on this side especially after 5pm
As a school kid I knew few kids/young folks from that area as we used to have cricket matches with them. Even in that age few of them were regular customers of brothel at our district place. So this is the background. Real story will follow.
We had a geography teacher. A nice person who was always target for kids as he was a little bit absent minded. He used to just get lost in his thoughts while teaching. And then suddenly wake up shaking his head as if saying no to something. Kids used to enjoy it.
And went on becoming more frequent. So I asked one of my classmates, why he is so. He revealed the story - the teacher of ours had a beautiful daughter. She was in first year of her college. She went to government office for some work and got late.
While returning back it was almost deserted. Villages in those time would get deserted early, especially in winters. And that area was mostly office premises so it was anyway ghost town beyond 4-5 pm. And on that fateful day she got caught between them like a fawn between wolves.
As the friend told me - there were initially 7-8 guys. But those 7-8 guys kept on calling their friends. It was like a feast for whole slum. She was there whole night. How many guys, nobody knows. Her father kept on searching for her frantically just to find in morning
in unrecognisable physical and mental condition. That shook our teacher from core. And that was the reason for his absent mindedness. I felt really bad for him. Even the story shook me. Nobody seen her in our village after that. Nobody knows what happened to her.
Worst part - the guys we used to play against in cricket tournaments; were some of those from that fateful night. I left my village long ago. But few things of that place never left me and this bad incident is one of them.
One more thing about 'that' area was - the state transport bus was made to go via that area. So the guys in that area would jump or climb up to windows to see if there are any girls. If they see one, they'll make comments / will harass. Nothing would deter them.
So the fear of passing through peaceful ghetto is very real. And its not just in India - its across globe.
Whoever don't agree - I challenge to prove me wrong.
