Nation FM put out an advert that they are looking for radio presenters. Having been on radio myself for many years, let me share what makes a good presenter.

Here's a mini thread for all those who want to be on any radio. It could help one or two people out there on your TL
Have a genuine interest in radio. Be interested in the art of radio. Do not go there because you want to be famous. If you have an interest in something, it shows and you will excel in it.
Your Personality matters. That, that is unique/ distinct about you is what makes you stand out as a good radio presenter. Bring to the table your own style, something original but at the same time, captivating. Do not imitate someone else.
Know & understand your audience. Know their lifestyle and aspirations and who they are. Every radio station has this, let it be your daily bible. Literally. On top of this, Be relatable to them- the target audience.
Be informed. I repeat, be informed. Know whats happening in and around the world. Do your research. Stay updated by the minute/ hour. If there is fire in the CBD, update your listener. If Trump wins an election now, inform your listener.
You must prep or prepare for your show. You just cannot walk in and wing it. Write down your points if you can. Think about your ideas/ talk points before hand. This helps you remember and will make your story more consistent and structured and flow when you go on air.
Think outside the box. When you choose a topic, do not just use it as is. Your listener is informed already. Bring to the table some different aspect of it that gives a listener that AHA moment through your enthusiasm and ability to offer a new perspective.
Be social media survey. You cannot be a presenter and not want to be connected to the world on/ via social media. Social media is a source of information and interaction. Use it to your advantage.
Air check your show. When the show is over, please take a moment to look back and take notes. No matter how well you think a show went, there’s always room for improvement. Ask yourself, did I add value to my listener?
There are certain topics that need an expert opinion. Please, look for one and invite to the show/ have them on air. Please do not spew your ignorance on certain topics. They are very sensitive. No one will judge you for bringing an expert to talk about it.
On radio, you paint pictures with your words. Draw us into your imagination and mind. I mean they radio is the theatre of the mind. While at it, make it fun.
Please don't be mean to your listeners. They trust you with their time. They tune in to you everyday. Engage them, talk to them and value them. They are your audience. The show is not about you and your co host FYI!
Your content on radio doesn't have to be offensive/ controversial for you to be a good presenter. You will be surprised that there's people out there who just want good music & good talk.
I speak from someone who has watched talent grow on air, and was show super producer/ manager for some of the best shows. The good days of my radio days, worked with some of the finest talented people around. Forever grateful. đź’•
