It gives me no joy at all to say this, but I am now absolutely certain that Trump will win a second term, or at least remain in power after a contested election. The combination of ecstatic violence from Trump supporters and a lack of unity to be found between Biden moderates and
the pissed off Left is really just spelling out the probability of Trump winning, regardless of what the polls are saying now. The Republicans and the “independents” who lean conservative look at Biden as a destructive leftist. The Left has given up finding a voice within the
Democratic Party for the most part, and no matter how stable and decent a Biden campaign may seem, there just isn’t a coalition there that can rally the votes necessary. A lot of people who came up voting for Obama and saw eight years of our institutions continuing to fail us are
not going to drum up the enthusiasm that carried Obama to two terms while Biden offers only the basic tenets of moderate liberal Democratic planks with a few token positions on climate and economic policy. I am voting for Biden and I encourage everyone else to do so as well. But
I also recognize the still smoldering anger a lot of people feel when the same empty promises are made and broken every four years and things only ever seem to get worse. Complain all you want about the apathy of young voters, but after decades of stagnating wages and diminishing
opportunities, it’s very tough to argue that anyone whose been a part of the power structure of this country is going to make things better for them. Factor in the continued assault on the rights of immigrants, people of color, and the LGBTQ community, and it just feels that the
promise of stability and moderate incrementalism has a limited appeal. I say all this with a very heavy heart because I know Americans are better than the government that represents them. I know that the loudest voices rarely speak for the majority in any argument. I know that I
am also very often wrong. I want to believe in the best of what I see in America, but that has been difficult to find in these times. I am comforted by the sight of protestors airing their grievances with the inexplicable abuse of state power in the form of wanton police violence
and the ability of a vocal few to force the national debate. But I am also terrified beyond verbalization by the advent of Nazi caravans of Trump supporters driving into cities to pick fights. I am terrified by the complicity of the police when white fascists carry guns to
rallies and threaten even more violence. We are a broken and violent society, without any hope for de-escalation or even an avenue of recourse when violence occurs. And this will only get worse as we descend even further into the maw of fascism. I wish I could offer even the
slightest modicum of hope in this thread, but I don’t see any light at the end of this tunnel. The call to action that will be needed is not one fit for mixed company, and will be censored. I just pray that you all and your families will be safe. God help us all.
