for the johnny and mark aave situation, i definitely agree that the video felt really wrong and im not even black but it didn’t feel right to hear them pass off aave as “internet slang”
to have your culture appropriated and seen as cool and fun when others use it, but seen as “unusual” when you represent it is seriously so frustrating. i would know as an asian who grew up being told my culture was weird, but now see others appropriating it
so yes i think the black community deserves a genuine apology from johnny and mark, they need to own up to their mistakes and learn not to do this again since it is highly offensive to not just black nctzens but the black community in general
knowing how sm is, they probably wont acknowledge the situation and will probably just sweep it under the rug like most racism scandals :/
and i also dont think we can excuse this situation by saying that johnny and mark grew up in north america, they don’t normally speak that way at all telling from other videos of them speaking in english, it was obviously forced
please note that im not trying to cancel johnny and mark, i literally love them sm but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be held accountable for their wrong doings
also, im sorry if this is not my place to speak, im not apart of the black community but i do support and think that the racism in kpop is so disgustingly normalized. please feel free to dm me if you want this thread to be taken down since i do not speak on-
-behalf of the black community. i just wanted to help bring attention to this issue and help people realize that cultural appropriation is so normalized that many people don’t realize that they even do it.
