bpd affects approx. 4-6% of ppl in the united states . that’s nearly 20 million ppl
TW SUICIDE// 20 million ppl who are at elevated risk for suicide relative to other disorders . approx 70% of ppl with bpd attempt suicide, and approx 10% complete suicide—thats 2 million ppl
20 million ppl who are stigmatized and demonized for the symptoms they experience
to give some perspective, an estimated 5.5% of ppl in the united states have cancer
think about how “normalized” the concept of having cancer is. it’s regarded as a “common” illness
there’s about the same number of ppl with bpd, and how much of the general population can articulate information on bpd that is free of stereotypes and stigma?
i guess my point is that bpd is a very real disorder and yet from a societal lens those of us with it are simply disregarded although the illness is very real and too often lethal
