Bank Holiday THREAD - part 2

After Windermere's sunshine and swallows over Claife Heights, I was feeling short of what Alfred Wainwright called "featureless desolation, and solitude, and silence"...

Welcome to Wasdale, near Shap.

Low cloud 'CLAG' was a bonus. AW had promised:
Terry Abraham was over in the other Wasdale that day filming handsome folk & fells. (Bet he'd have rather been over here with the wild Angelica).

Then the clouds lifted. I'd not noticed that the Shap Summit Memorial had it's own memorial before...
Gordon's widow & friends came up to Shap in 2013, on this, his 1955 bus. To remember Gordon and everyone up there. It's a hard place.

I followed the Roman road, away from the traffic.
It soon gets quiet.
Never really gets dry.
The peat's eroding. Changing the climate.
There's lots being done by @CumbriaWildlife to restore these places. Much more still to do.

Old metal fence stakes laughed at the young wooden upstarts: "We're still here, you'll only last 15 years..."
It's mainly 'open access' around there. But this gate was wired shut? Sheep showed me the answer.
This sustainable stile did the rest.

Celebrated finding the 'trig point' Alfred had drawn fifty years ago @OrdnanceSurvey
The only landmark is "t'stone on top of t'other" but the cartographer wasn't local so misheard & mapped it "To Stone Or To'Ther" instead.
There's a "White Stains" on a local map too (it's actually White Stones. Same thing happened).

A dozen deer flew by. Sheep hid from the rain.
I didn't fancy walking a 60mph road in sheet rain, but a ten minute 'trespass' kept me safely on track.

There's a petition about awful new trespass laws, (without which I'd now be a criminal. Or roadkill).

127k signed. Few days left. Please check it out https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300139
My short 'detour' took me past a forgotten homing pigeon coop and later, what (I think) is a pen for birds that are kept to be shot. And a shooting hide.

A satellite-tagged Hen Harrier disappeared nearby in 2018.

The day's last gate seemed about right.
