#Patriots notebook in thread form today: Cam is clearly the best QB on the team and gets better each day. Had his quickest release of camp on Sunday, starting to see the field better pre-snaps/pick out matchups. Chemistry with Edelman, Sanu & Byrd stands out.
Biggest question marks after camp are TE & off-ball LB. #Patriots are leaning heavily on rookies at both spots. Asiasi, Keene, Uche, and Jennings have all had strong rookie camps. But those guys better grow up fast or NE will be lacking legit difference markers at TE/LB.
As I said earlier, Gunner can definitely get open against NFL coverage. But he was plagued by drops at times when he does create separation. Looks like a technique/repetition thing more than focus drops. He's a legit route runner now, both outside and in the slot. #Patriots
Will be interesting to see what the #Patriots do with Jakobi Meyers. He had his best practice of camp on Sunday, catching 3-of-4 targets. But has been noticeably quiet compared to last summer and the Pats may opt for speedier, more versatile options. Not sure where he fits.
Never got a chance to see much of Jeff Thomas, but his speed when on the field looks legit. Quick, fast. Definitely makes DBs more uncomfortable than Byrd when the pads are on. Wonder if the #Patriots are hiding Thomas in case they need to sneak him onto the practice squad.
Talked a lot about Sanu. His chemistry w/Cam might be the best of the group, but he's not a threat to run by anyone. He can use his quickness to uncover on quick-hitters underneath the defense. His experience & rapport with Cam make him a tough cut in a mostly unproven group.
Damiere Byrd is basically a lock to make the team, but his speed isn't special in terms of a deep threat. Phillip Dorsett fast, not Cooks. Byrd's speed was more of a factor on intermediate routes running comebacks or digs with defenders retreating then stopping down quickly.
Do the #Patriots have a spot for UDFA RB J.J. Taylor? Burst, lateral agility (jump cuts), pass-catching, return ability stood out. But he needs to run with more power. Taylor does look like "Little Dion" out there. Think he's a top 53 player talent wise, but BB & rookie RBs.
Final roster spot at OL will likely come down to rookie guard Michael Onwenu vs OT Korey Cunningham. #Patriots like Onwenu a lot, and his power as a run blocker is a legit NFL trait. Cunningham started fast last week, then finished slow. Leaning Onwenu, who has starter upside.
The final EDGE spot on the #Patriots defense is coming down to Derek Rivers vs. Shilique Calhoun. Rivers's explosiveness/power make him the better pass rusher of the two. Calhoun has experience, ability to set a sturdy edge, and special teams value on his side. Close.
Transition to safety is on for Joejuan Williams. He'll be in the mix for snaps in the Chung role guarding TEs, playing in the slot/box. Don't expect he'll play deep safety, but maybe some split-safety zones. Don't think we'll see him at outside CB for awhile. #Patriots
As I put together a roster projection, wonder if first year post-Brady they emphasize youth/upside over STer Justin Bethel. Releasing Bethel means they can keep one of Thomas, Taylor, or a young OL. Bethel clearly can't play on defense. Plenty of guys still rostered for ST.
Last one: the #Patriots O had its up's and down's throughout camp. Flashes, lacked consistency. But an important reminder that it's where the team is at the end of the year that matters, not August. With Cam, you see with more reps & scheming how this offense can come together.
