When I first started watching the film "Intersexion", it was hard for me not to become angry. I understand, that when the interviewees were children, times were different. Society was different. Being "different" or "not normal" wasn't allowed or accepted.
But to think that they weren't even given a choice. They were raised almost like zoo animals. No one should have to live their life feeling ashamed of who they are or be in constant fear of being rejected. And although many of the interviewees endured a lot of trauma...
I am thankful that they now have a community, a support system. Everyone deserves that. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. What makes me or you any different from them?
My FAVORITE quote from the film was, "People have genitals, people are not genitals."
Although a majority of the film was disheartening, and honestly gave me little faith in society, the end of the film, and parts of the assigned readings proved to me that we, as a society, are slowly beginning to change. Newer generations are more accepting, more kind.
And older generations are learning to change their ways. The last sentence from the reading "The Truth About Boys and Girls" really stood out to me, and I think everyone needs to see it so I have attached it to this thread.
“Appreciating how sex differences emerge can reduce dangerous stereotyping and give parents and teachers ideas for cross-training boys' and girls' minds, to minimize their more troubling discrepancies and enable all children to more fully develop their diverse talents. “
Pleasee reply with thoughts, opinions, and questions. I really want to hear what everyone has to say about this weeks topics:)
Also this was all for SOC 4080
(forgot to say that when I started the thread)
