TW racism, mention of sexual assault!
A thread of Danielle live quotes from the 19for20 live and how it was offensive & hurtful: (Danielle if you see this - please take the time to read it and understand how you’ve hurt people. Especially your fans) PART 1 😭
firstly I would like to say that I am not a POC. Therefore I obviously do not understand fully. And I understand that i’ll never understand. So feel free to add any of your opinions & anything I missed/ points if you’re comfortable! Now furthermore...
Talking about Barrett’s hair: starts at 2:50 in the 1st live: “I loved all your transitions of hair.” *mimicking the way Barrett would play with her braids* “Would you ever ask the show if you could have it on the show?” “Do you think you could wrap it in a low bun?”
- (when wearing the turnout gear)
How can this be offensive and hurtful? A lot of women of colour get many comments on their hair & it gets annoying. I’m not an expert on this as i’m not a poc however I am going from my knowledge & from what I knew people found hurtful.
20:50 1st live: "I just want to have a discussion about the differences between race and nationality and sex and gender. That was all I knew. For me, having debates and conversations for people - if you just start at the bare bottom of the simplest things-
- like 'I am a human', 'I am a woman', 'You are a woman' 'You are black'. starting with these simple facts, i don't know why but it just helps in conversations. so to me that was something i really wanted to talk about."
How can this be offensive and hurtful? Why did she choose to say Barrett is black but not that herself is white?? There are many interpretations to this and it doesn’t sit right with many.
22:28 1st live: “It is interesting how people then use it the opposite way which they feel intersectionality is when i say that we’re form of victimisation. Like people want to be put into these categories because they want to be victimized[....]”
She was talking about that it’s interesting that people take intersectionality & want to be victimized & be put into categories. How can this be offensive and hurtful? ⁃ She was basically saying that people who are victimized want to be victimized. That is so hurtful to people-
who have been discriminated against, sexually assaulted, etc. which said that the people who are victimized want to be victimized, when none of them do. That is how a lot of people understood it.
28:08 1st live: Danielle said actors are more empathetic because they're forced to put themselves in other people's shoes. and that people think they don't understand but they do because they do it for a living.
This was hurtful to some because she's saying that actors understand what people are going through because they put themselves in other people's shoes. The issue is that pretending to understand isn't the same thing. especially considering when you ask an actor how they do-
do their sad things and they say they think of their ownexperiences. Every actor has to put themselves in other shoes differently however it doesn’t mean they EVER fully understand what that experience may be like.
28:48 1st live: "How do you talk to someone that's like 'but I've been through harder things, I've been through something harder'....It's really hard.....I wanted to cuss just now. " - Yes it can be hard to talk to people who think like that but if it’s on a topic extremely-
important - you shouldn’t just give up because some of the conversations get a little difficult.
48:19 1st live: "whereas something like voting in your self interest. Like is it considered are you viewing it as a negative thing because I think from this perspective it feels like you're saying it's a negative thing to vote in your own self interest, but i kind of view it as-
my self interest is I'm an empathetic person who cares about equality - so I'm going to vote in my own self interest which in my own self interest is equality for all.” Barrett had to ask what she meant by self interest because she was really bad with the wording. What Danielle-
was originally saying was that she thinks people vote for a leader who has benefits to them personally instead of for a leader who benefits the rest of the community. for example say if a leader were to give my job a pay raise, obviously I would like that but then the money for-
the raise is coming from the leader taking away funding for homeless shelters. while this leader benefits myself, I’m not going to vote for them because I don’t want funding to be taken away from homeless shelters.
Shen then talked about at 50:19 first live how someone's views on abortion could sway what someone believes is right for them, then she corrected it to what's right for the world. This made many people think she was prolife as the way she chose to word it. She never cleared it up
1:12 2nd live: Danielle said she struggled with tons of discrimination in the industry but couldn't name one and started laughing when she couldn't.
4:25 2nd live:“I’ve absolutely been told ‘you did not yet hired because you’re too muscular’.” This is not discrimination. This is extremely hurtful and offensive to people who have faced discrimination and for her to compare her experience. especially after Barrett had talked-
about a time she had been discriminated against for her hair.
7:37 2nd live: “I struggled with the me too movement even at first because I had trained myself so well at being one of the the guys because that was the way youre accepted.” What’s the problem with this?
